Zoom controls are fundamental to the usability of your store locator or product locator widget.
WP Maps provides fine-tuned zoom settings that help you define how users interact with your map, offering a tailored experience whether you’re showcasing a nationwide store network or a dense cluster of local shops.
What These Settings Do #
WP Maps offers several zoom-related controls:
- Maximum Zoom: This sets the maximum zoom level users can reach when interacting with the map. It’s ideal for letting users zoom into tightly packed store clusters or product locations.
- Minimum Zoom: Defines how far out users can zoom. This is useful when you don’t want users viewing irrelevant continents or global geography.
- Default Zoom: The initial zoom level when the map loads. If you serve a specific region (e.g., California), you can set a zoom that shows that area clearly.
- Search Zoom: Determines how close the map zooms in after a user performs a search. For example, if a user searches for “Los Angeles,” the map will zoom to show that city in detail.
- Clicked Zoom: When a user clicks on a store marker, this setting controls how much the map zooms in to show the clicked store’s surroundings.

Use Cases and Benefits #
These zoom levels allow you to craft a custom navigation experience:
- Improved Usability: Prevents over-zooming or under-zooming, giving users just the right amount of context.
- Tailored Experience: E-commerce brands with high store density in urban areas benefit from tighter zoom ranges, while rural-focused businesses may prefer broader views.
- Performance Optimization: Excessive zoom levels can affect rendering speeds on some devices. By capping Zoom, you ensure smoother performance.
How to Enable #
To customize these zoom settings:
- Log in to your WP Maps account and click on the “Widgets” tab.
- Click on “ Install Widget”.
- Under the “Map Configuration” section, locate the zoom settings.
- Adjust the values for each zoom parameter to your preference.
Each setting is numeric and generally ranges from None (fully zoomed out) to 19 (fully zoomed in), depending on the map provider you’re using (Google Maps or Mapbox).
